FROM NEON TO CANYONS
Neon nights, red rock and open road. Very good sunsets. Probably more stars than you expect.
Five days, three states and a very good reason to wake up before sunrise.
We start under the neon lights of Las Vegas and head into the desert — through old Route 66 towns, red-rock country and some of the biggest landscapes in the American Southwest.
A few moments worth going this far for.
Itinerary
We meet in Las Vegas — no long drives, no early alarms. Not yet. Tonight is for meeting the crew, getting lost in the lights of the Strip, and watching Cirque du Soleil make gravity look optional. Dinner, a little Vegas, and the beginning of something good. Tomorrow, we trade neon for desert.
Coffee. Bags in the van. We’re out early. Past Hoover Dam and onto old Route 66, with a stop in Seligman for vintage signs, roadside diners, and a little old-school America. By late afternoon, we’re standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon. We stay for sunset. Some places are better without rushing.
We’re up before the sun — coffee in hand, wrapped in something warm, watching the Grand Canyon slowly turn from shadow to gold. Then we hit the road again. Open desert. Monument Valley. Those endless American roads we’ve all seen in the movies. We save Forrest Gump Point for sunset — red mesas ahead, the road stretching toward the horizon, and nowhere else we need to be. One of those evenings you remember.
Another early morning, this time above Horseshoe Bend. We watch the desert wake up, then step into the narrow sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon. Afterward — blue water and red rock at Lake Powell before we follow the road north toward Kanab. Windows down. Music on.
There’s a quicker way back to Vegas. We don’t take it. Instead: the strange red hoodoos of Bryce Canyon, the towering walls of Zion, and one last beautiful road through the American West. Then the desert fades and neon appears again. Same Vegas. Different group. Tonight, no early alarms. We drop the bags, change the dusty clothes, and head out for one last night together. Dinner. Drinks. Vegas. A proper final party. We’ve earned this one.
No itinerary today. Sleep in. Find some coffee. Laugh about whatever happened last night. After five days of desert roads, cold sunrises, canyon sunsets, shared playlists, and a few new inside jokes, it’s time to say goodbye. Until the next MANDRA.
