PATAGONIA
Mountains, glaciers, wild rivers and long roads. Probably more wind than you expect.
Two weeks of very good roads and slightly ridiculous weather.
We start in Santiago and head south, following Patagonia through long roads, small towns, glaciers and mountains all the way into Argentina. There will be early mornings, big days outside, very good hikes and plans occasionally rewritten by the weather. That's part of it.

A few moments worth going this far for.

Itinerary
We meet in Santiago, settle in, and gather for our first dinner together. New faces, good food, a glass of Chilean wine — and the feeling that something very good is about to begin.

An early flight takes us deep into southern Chile. From Balmaceda, we pick up the road and make our way toward Lake General Carrera — mountains getting bigger, towns getting smaller, Patagonia slowly taking over. By evening, we're by the lake.

We take kayaks onto the impossibly blue water of General Carrera and paddle into the Marble Caves — shaped by water over thousands of years. Later, we trade paddles for hiking boots and explore the landscape from the trail.

Today moves at a different pace. We head into the mountains on horseback, following trails through the Patagonian landscape. Later, there’s time to slow down, cast a line, and simply be where we are.

An early start and another flight take us farther south, to Punta Arenas. We check into our hotel and keep the rest of the evening easy. Tomorrow, the mountains are waiting.

An early start. Boots on. And one of Patagonia's legendary trails ahead of us. We hike toward the base of Las Torres, through forest, valleys and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery until the three granite towers finally rise in front of us.

We travel across the vast landscapes of southern Patagonia in search of one of its most unexpected residents: king penguins. A long road, remote landscapes and a place that genuinely feels close to the edge of the world.

Today is about the road. We leave Chile behind and cross into Argentina, watching the landscape change as we make our way toward tiny El Chaltén. Dinner, a good rest, and Fitz Roy somewhere above us.

This is one of those days. We set out early for the trail to Fitz Roy, walking through forests, valleys and mountain landscapes until the final climb brings us to Laguna de los Tres. And there it is. One of Patagonia’s most iconic views — and one of the moments this whole journey has been building toward.

Another wild day outside. We head toward Ventisquero Viedma for a hike through the glacial landscape, including a Tyrolean traverse along the way. Rock, ice, wind and that enormous Patagonian horizon around us.

We leave El Chaltén for El Calafate and continue to Perito Moreno. Nothing quite prepares you for the scale of it — a vast wall of blue ice, constantly moving, cracking and occasionally sending enormous pieces into the water below.

After nearly two weeks of mountains, wind, long roads and early mornings, we fly to Buenos Aires. Tonight we sit down together one more time — good food, wine, stories that already sound better when retold, and plenty to laugh about.

A slow breakfast. No alarm. We talk about where we've been — and, inevitably, where we should go next. The rest of the day is yours to wander Buenos Aires before flights home.
